Why Cam Tuners

The Sound Is in the Bend and Release

Cam tuners bend and release the string rather than simply winding up and down. That smooth, expressive transition is part of the classic banjo sound. The Heritage Signature Cam Tuner is built for traditional players chasing classic cam-tuner expression and progressive players who want expressive tuning movement with better mechanical confidence.

  • Expressive bend-and-release movement
  • Classic cam-tuner feel
  • Built for traditional and progressive players
  • Designed for smoother, more confident use

Design Improvements

Classic Feel, Modern Reliability

Legacy cam tuners have a sound players love, but older designs can bring reliability and setup challenges. Welded components can eventually fail, and setting the high-pitch note can require two hands. This design preserves the classic cam-tuner feel while improving reliability, ease of use, and overall design.

Classic sound preserved

Designed to retain the expressive cam-tuner movement players expect.

Stronger mechanical design

Developed to address known weaknesses in legacy designs.

Easier setup and use

Refined through prototyping to improve the player experience.

American-made precision

Machined and refined in the USA.

The Story

The Story Behind the Heritage Signature Cam Tuner

The Heritage Signature Cam Tuner began with a love of the classic cam-tuner sound: the bend, the release, and the smooth expressive transition that has inspired banjo players for generations.

Heritage collaborated with John Hafermann on the CAD design through multiple iterations, then spent nearly three years searching for a CNC shop that could meet the requirement to manufacture the tuner in the United States.

That search led to Ray Batista of Deedrick Precision Machining. Through prototyping, testing, and refinement, the collaboration produced a modern American-made design that honors classic banjo cam tuners while improving mechanical confidence, setup, and ease of use.
